26 X 1.5" slick road tires won't convert your old mountain bike into a hybrid. It just doesn't work!

    This is strange. Typical MTB has 295 - 300 mm support height. So lowering it by 10 -12 mm (difference between 1.95 and 1.5 tire) puts it between 280 -290 mm. On par with typical road bike and actually higher than typical trekking or hybrid bike (those tend to have 274 - 280 mm support height). I think, you are overreacting here.

    Hah, you know what. BOOOO. A few weeks back I complained about my local bike shops and the crap service they provide. You gave me a snarky comment about me being the problem. Guess what the Giant shop guy sold me when I went in looking for some better rolling tires for my mountain bike as I was mostly riding it on the road. 50 to 70km trips. Just getting started with cycling. New guy to cycling with really no knowledge.... KENDA 1.5" tires. Good on you to point out I'm the problem. Glad we got that figured out.

    For grins, i put Schwinn 26 x 2.0 file tread beach cruiser tires from Walmart on a jamis dual suspension bike and rode city paths and dry xc trails. They rolled fast, but the smooth edges made unnerving squealing sounds when cornering on dirt. It was a fun exercise, but I moved them to a commuter full squish cheap bike for gravel roads.

    I have 26 x 1.5 recumbent tires on a road tandem. It works well enough. I like 700c better, but we are 200 and 180lb so the 26 tires take the shock without wrecking wheels and breaking spokes.

    What bothers me is that no one seems to know that speed, grip and comfort depend much more on casing and rubber compound than tread. Everyone thinks you need lots of tread to have grip and almost no one believes me when I say my MTB with 2.1" knobby tyres has much less grip on a wet road than my road bike with 27mm slicks. And my MTB rolls really fast too with those light casing XC tyres. These hybrid semi slicks are often so cheap and hard that they roll way slower and feel much less comfortable too.

    Since 26" (ETRTO 559) 1.95-2.0 (~50mm) slick or semi-slick urban and trekking tires exist, no point getting as narrow as 1.5, since wider provides grip and air space to absorb bumps and such on the pavement, which makes them more comfortable and faster than 26" x 1.5, even 26" x 1.75 is way better than 1.5. I''ve converted old MTBs/ATBs for 1.75 to 2.15 wide city or trekking tires and they do great on all occasions from pavement to gravel (just lower the tire pressure some) and let's be honest, old 26" MTBs were generally not that great in off-roading to begin with.

    I'm just of the general belief that every bike should have 2inch/50mm slick tires. They're more comfortable and perform great on everything other than mountain biking. My gravel bike has 29x2.0 WTB Thickslicks that have performed shockingly well for over 1500 miles of off-road fun! P.S. I've run 38mm tires on a 29er that came stock with a 2.3in/58mm and rode it for 200 gravel miles on my first big event with no pedal strikes so I feel as though he's overstating the potential performance loss of a smaller tire on a 26in mtb.

    You may not like the look or feel of the 26 x 1.5, but the 26 x 2.1 only raised the pedal clearance by a quarter of an inch. Really insignificant. No one should be pedaling through a tight turn, they should have the pedal high on the turning side and coast through until they resume an upright position. If you really want to make a hybrid out of a hardtail mountain bike, there are great 26 x 1.75 road tires available, I like the Continental Contact Plus. Then it will be on to crankset, stems, handlebars, and a saddle swap. Shortening up those cranks by 5 or even 10 mm would change the ground clearance more than the tires. I think the bike could be turned into a decent hybrid/commuter, probably for about half of the cost of a new entry level hybrid.

  • @dougfromsoanierana
    @dougfromsoanierana 11 часов назад

    Older mountain bikes are the Swiss Army knives of bikes. You can knobby them up and tackle medium off-road trails. You can convert many to drop bars and have a “gravel bike”. You can slick them up and add hybrid handlebars and turn them into city bikes. Most have enough mounting points for at least rear racks and maybe fenders. And there are still so many options available for 26-inch wheels.

    I got 26x1.75" semi-slick tires for a mountain bike a two and a half years ago and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. The rolling resistance is so much better, I've never had a single puncture, no pedal strike, and the adherence is amazing. I didn't have the money to just "get a hybrid bike", nor did I have the money to pay a mechanic that would btch about my tire choice.

    I'm going to be honest. There's a cycling option for ANYONE. I started Bike riding again when I was 46, after getting Bariatric surgery to come down from 515lbs. One of my goals post-surgery was to take up more activities, get out from behind my computer. So I went to a pro Bike Shop and got myself a 2023 XL Gravel TREK(I stand on reliability and "push-pedal, bike-go-forward" over speed) While I loved riding again....I have hairs that are the thickness and density of copper wire....EVERYWHERE. So, after two weeks of sheer torture, and discovering the magic of Chamois Butter, I finally realized....I didn't like the ride. I loved getting out, racing around, seeing my neighborhood, sure. I didn't like the chain-tats, the knee, back, shoulder, and wrist problems, the fact that I was facing DOWN a lot of times, focused on the 6-12 feet in front of my bike...But, I loved doing something, and I wanted to get a bike for my 70 year old mother...who had undiagnosed balance issues, and was falling off her Touring TREK. Enter my salvation: a tadpole recumbent trike. I got one for her, and one for me. I'm now bike riding in a recliner. No body aches(I actually feel BETTER getting out of my trike, because my back gets a MASSAGE rather than sitting on a jackhammer for 10+ miles) no balance issues. I'm able to see more of the world around me. I don't feel as endangered by cars(I got one that I call the "Humvee" of trikes: the Trident Terrain Fat E-Trike) because I'm no longer at risk of having to dart sideways to miss like a dip or pothole that might spill me forward. And mom's riding even more than i thought. On her Touring Trek, I could get her to ride one PERFECT Weather day....out of five. Anything else, and she'd balk or back out. This did nothing to help her balance issues. Now, she's asking ME to go riding with her, instead of me trying to persuade her to go. And even I'm now amblin and ramblin on my trike. Best of all, is the speed. Yeah, we both have E-Trikes. But because we're never going to win a racing competition, we don't care about how light or aero they are: we can get what's COMFORTABLE, over what's fast. So, we sit higher up, she's got assist handles on hers to help her get out...mine's just big and beefy. We've got bags and carriers for whatever we want, and if we need to up the speed, we just up the assist. We may be capped at 20mph, but if you don't ride, you're never going to get to a point where you BEAT 20mph to make it a noticeable difference. I write all of this, to say...don't stop looking. Maybe a bike isn't for you. If speed and trail-busting aren't your end all goals, if you're older and you don't want to come home to immediately jump in the tub, or if you want to just have fun and get out in the sun...a trike, or even a quad-trike conversion might be an option for you. It's expensive, but you can be a lot more comforted on a Trike, than you ever will with a bike.

    That’s a hybrid bike, not a mountain bike. The front fork is about the lightest weight one you can buy. It doesn’t have an oversized frame. Betcha it didn’t come with a dropper post either. As for pedal strike, that’s a rim size issue. It’s not the fault of the tire. Look at it another way… if you air down on the knobby tires for, you know, mountain trails, the rolling circumference will suck just as badly. A good solution to pedal strike is shorter crank arms. This is something regularly done on mountain bikes. I would wager that the crank arms are 170mm or 175mm… like most medium and large frame hybrid bikes (and all road bikes in those fame sizes too). As for the “look” of the tires… whatever. I’ve yet to meet anyone who can truly judge a tire by how it looks. Subtle differences in compound, carcass, sidewall stiffness, and tread pattern can add up to a lot more than the eyeball can see.
